You should never let anybody but yourself guide your own life. Nine times out of ten, they're not in the right place to tell you what to do...

(This statement might just be irrelevant, because when all is said and done there are many factors and people dictating your life. First and foremost, parents are the first to implant values and what have you. Second but certainly not last in importance, the environment, in its most general aspects. Nobody is truly free, whether its the nurturing from your loved ones or the nature of the society that you live in.)

...in other words just avoid taking bad advice to heart. Lord only knows how much I've had to learn and re-learn this.
